Souvenir De Cassis

Blackcurrant Saison

Souvenir de Cassis is a blackcurrant saison shaped by time, place, and restraint. First tasted in Ljubljana, the beer carries an impression rather than a statement — dark fruit, acidity, and spice held together through fermentation and extended ageing. This is not a fruit-led beer, but one where the fruit becomes part of the structure.

  • Aged for 21 months in Moscatel barrels, allowing oak, acidity, and fermentation character to integrate naturally

  • Transferred onto blackcurrants for a further 3 months, focusing on depth rather than fruit intensity

  • Bottle conditioned and rested until carbonation reached the right level

I’ve painted original artwork for a number of barrel aged and canned beers for Our Brewery.

I’m not all that sure if the average beer enthusiast pays huge attention to the artwork on labels. As an artist and designer it’s often the main reason that I pick a beer or other products.

The process for the artist may not be as slow as the process that goes into making the beer and, it’s possibly harder to define or fully explain. This is often why people will say “I could do that'“ or “my five year old could have done that.”

I guess that comes down to understanding or respect for art and creativity but also, whether the artist brings something to the table that’s both unique and valuable. For me, this kind of work is never an exercise in looking pretty, being marketable or picking some colours and splashing some paint around, it has far more meaning and comes from years of trying, testing, observing, failing…

And, in this case I created lots of test paintings before discovering the one that worked best for the final label.

You won’t see my name on the labels but I’m proud of the artwork.
