My Kind of Contract

You give me money, I’ll give you creative.
I’ll start when the check clears.
Time is money. More time is more money.
I’ll listen to you. You listen to me.
You tell me what you want, I’ll tell you what you need.
You want me to be on time, I want you to be on time.
What you use is yours, what you don’t is mine.
I can’t give you stuff I don’t own.
I’ll try not to be an ass, you should do the same.
If you want something that’s been done before, use that.
If you want your way, you have to pay.
If you don’t pay, I have final say.
Let’s create something great together.

I am incredibly grateful for the clients I have worked with and continue to work with who, kind of already get it. What I mean is, I don’t feel like I’d ever have to state these guidelines to them or have them sign a contract of this nature. They allow me to be creative, they pay me when I work, they respect my time and they respect my opinions.

But, it isn’t always as simple. It can’t always be so simple.

The biggest challenge for me

You tell me what you want, I’ll tell you what you need.

I am the worst person I know for down-playing my own ability and saying things like “I’m no expert.”

In conversations about design however, where you sit down with me to hire me… chances are, I am the expert.

If you’re the expert then you don’t need me. Do it yourself.

But, if you don’t know how then you need to trust someone who does.
