“Stuff Matters” or “The Strange Stories of the Marvellous Materials that Shape Our Man-made World“, to give it it’s full title, does exactly what it says on the tin.
Mark Miodownik is a Professor of Material – which sounds boring but it actually is awesome. How do I know? I know because in reading his book “Stuff Matters” I suddenly got excited about concrete, curious about ceramic and abnormally giddy about foam (it was my favourite chapter).
Everyone who I have talked to about this book has had the exactly same reaction – YAWN. But, seriously, if you want to read something that is well written, interesting and entertaining I recommend that you pick up this book. It took me back to my days at University where I spent three months studying materials and reminded me of all those forgotten bits of trivia that I like to bring out on special occasion *Did you know that concrete gets stronger and stronger year after year?awkward laugh*.
On another note, don’t you just love the cover? The Hardback version of the book wasn’t just as attractive so it was really worth updating the paperback cover. Here is a beautiful behind the scenes look at how if was created.
