Things I learned on Sunday….

“Now the rabble that was among them……….” Numbers 11

The ‘rabble’ started to moan and complain. That’s what the ‘rabble’ does….

They were not content with what God was doing. They wanted what they wanted!

What they wanted was always going to be different from what God wanted and what God provided for them…..

Some of us are like this. But, are we really followers of Jesus or are we part of the ‘rabble?’

The ‘rabble’ always places what the ‘rabble’ wants above God…..

Work, money, sex, friends, technology, sports, music, drugs, food, cars, appearance and a millon other things.

The ‘rabble’ sets us on a fast track to idolatry!

In John ch 6  we read this;

Jesus said to them, ”I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.

What we really need is Jesus but, I wonder do we really believe this?

Work, money, sex, friends, technology, sports, music, drugs, food, cars, appearance and a millon other things.

What we really need is Jesus…..

Things I learned on Sunday…

“…..he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait…..” Acts 1:4

Pentecost Sunday……

I grew up in a denomination that might never have mentioned ‘pentecost sunday’ (perhaps) or, at least not in the way that many Churches will have done yesterday….

The lasting thought I had yesterday morning was about our witness. Our willingness to share our faith, or not as the case may be…

And not just sharing our faith with those we work alongside or with family but, online? Facebook, twitter and blogs?

What’s our witness like?”

“…….grant to your servants to continue to speak your word with all boldness…..” Acts 4:29

Planning an outdoor service in Northern Ireland is problematic, especially when you consider the standard of weather in recent years during June!

Kids like balloons!

Two acoustic guitars and a Djembe is enough…..

Other people hate onions…..

Things I learned on Sunday…

Most sunday mornings I don’t really want to go to Church….

But God has always got something to say to me, if I am willing to listen.

We really depend on technology a lot. The power went awol for a moment during the morning service and, we coped but, for a few moments it looked bleak with no screens and the terrible thought of using a hymn book hung over our heads!

Most sunday evenings I don’t really want to go to Church….

But God has always got something to say to me, if I am willing to listen.

People are strange and despite what Jim Morrison said you do not have to be a stranger to be aware of this fact! People somehow have this perception of who they are and, can be allowed to carry it though their entire life if someone doesn’t stop and tell them otherwise….

Church is not and, should never be, a display of beautiful and fixed people. Its a group of messy, sinful, broken and damaged people that need God and need each other….

Being raised in conservative evangelicalism has wrecked some people, perhaps beyond repair.

Sometimes people who are not Christians get to run churches…..and, destroy other people!

I am always somewhat depressed on a monday!

But God has always got something to say to me, if I am willing to listen.

What about you? Did you learn anything yesterday?
