Archives For Things I learned on Sunday

“compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another”

these few words are from Colossians Chapter 3….[read it here]

The Chapter begins with ‘if then you have been raised with Christ‘ so the premise here is that I have declared my faith in Christ……I have said I am a Christian…..and, I am to ‘seek the things that are above.’

If then……..ok, so I have said I am a Christian and I am around church, involved, engaged………so……..how does that actually look?

What a challenging chapter and especially those few words at the centre of it…

“compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another”

Does my life look this way?

I don’t get off the hook if I have a different temperament than you…….or if my job isn’t as good as yours……or if I am sick and you are not……circumstances should not be the springboard for our lack of compassion, kindness, meekness, patience or our inability to bear with one another!

Challenging!

“As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.” Ephesians 4 1-6

Humble……gentle……..patient………bearing with one another in love…..

Make every effort………unity

The ‘protestant’ denominations,  it would seem, have been weak in this area for a long time! Weak is maybe somewhat of an understatement…..we have thousands of different types of churches with different labels and names and brands! There are literally thousands!

Historically we have split and re-formed and divided and re-built with new names and new labels and, currently our trend [locally] seems to be that we must move house often!

The lack of unity as a result of musical opinions or dress-code or the charisma of a preacher……..how we spend our money, whether we entertain our children well enough…….or, because someone offended us! It’s frightening!

Make every effort………unity! It is simple……….difficult but, simple!

And if God calls you to work in a different area and it makes more sense to start again in a new church community nearer to home…….make every effort……unity!

And if God calls you to a certain area that needs the local church to invest time and bring God’s word into it like never before……..make every effort……..unity!

Because there are valid and real reasons to move church….I get that!

But, if Church is tough for you because right now you don’t like how they are spending money……make every effort…….unity! If you have strong opinions on the music or the lighting or the youth leaders or whatever………make every effort….unity!

Make every effort…….unity!

“Remind them to be submissive to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good work, to speak evil of no one, to avoid quarreling, to be gentle, and to show perfect courtesy toward all people. For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another. But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Saviour, so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. The saying is trustworthy, and I want you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to devote themselves to good works. These things are excellent and profitable for people. But avoid foolish controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels about the law, for they are unprofitable and worthless. As for a person who stirs up division, after warning him once and then twice, have nothing more to do with him, knowing that such a person is warped and sinful; he is self-condemned.” Titus 3 : 1-11

There are some challenges here for you and I……..the bloggers/tweeters/facebook-ers…………

“……speak evil of no one, to avoid quarreling, to be gentle, and to show perfect courtesy toward all people”

I’ve not always watched my conduct in these areas…..how about you?

“…..avoid foolish controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels about the law, for they are unprofitable and worthless”

I’ve certainly been slack here……..posting foolishly and entering into quarrels…….

These are certainly some things for me to re-consider now and while on my break from blogging/twitter/facebook in July……..what about you?

In Northern Ireland, many of our church buildings empty during the summer months……especially in the evenings……….the sun shines and we all drive north to the coast………or light up the BBQ and find ‘better’ things to do…..

But, yesterday we learned that you can go to Church on a sunny morning in Ballymena………then, hop in the car, drive to the beach, eat lunch on the beach, walk along the beach, splash in the water, drive home and be back in good time for our evening service at Church…..

Our good friend Keith was preaching……….he is such a blessing

I didn’t take notes during yesterdays sermon…..after lunch I was reading some more of Matt Chandlers book ‘The Explicit Gospel

And, as if I needed to be reminded of this point……which I did……..and I do, continually………he just described the closing & main thrust of the sermon better than I could have…….

“God doesn’t need sacrifices. God is saying, (in Isaiah 1: 10-12) “I don’t need your bulls. I don’t want your goats. You’re missing the point. I’m trying to communicate to you how disgusting  and how horrible and how costly your sin is before me. And instead of feeling the weight of that and actually repenting, you just keep doing what you’re doing, all the while bringing me goats and bulls like that’s what I really want. They’re like a wife beater who brings his wife flowers. She doesn’t want his stupid flowers. She wants him to repent; she wants to be honoured.

The same thing plays out even to this day. Christ’s work demands the response of faith, but we want to make donations. It is astounding how many evangelicals are not doing Christianity at all; they’re doing the Levitical priesthood. They’re trying to offer God good behaviour so he’ll like them.”
