Flickering Pixels…..

flickering_pixelsLets be clear on one thing which iv told you before….

“Im rubbish at book reviews” so don’t hold your breath for one here!

In fact, im rubbish at reading books! I read lots of parts of books and get bored of them, then i pick them up again and eventually i sometimes finish books! Usually i don’t though..

“Flickering pixels are the tiny dots of light that make up the screens of life – from TV’s to cell phones. They are invisible, but they change us. In this provocative book, author Shane Hipps takes readers beneath the surface of things to see how the technologies we use end up using us……..”

Cherith bought me this for Christmas, do you think she is trying to tell me something?

I guess if i manage to read it all in one sitting i may learn something. I managed 2 chapters last night and so far so good, i think im on track with what he is saying…….

Relevant Magazine rated it their ‘best book of 2009′ here

Some of the material in this book was previously published in ‘The hidden power of electronic culture’ and i think a few people i know have read it…

BT & some tweets…..

bt_logo1Are you with BT as a phone or internet provider?

If so, do you have any issues or problems with the service they provide?

A couple of blog posts ago i mentioned our broadband being down for 4 days and the subsequent resolution of that problem. The great thing about all of this has been the use of twitter during our problem.

I still get asked from time to time what twitter is!

In a nutshell, BTCare on twitter, saw my complaint and reacted! No disrespect to the people i spoke to when i called BT, but we only got a solution when twitter entered the arena!

Oh, and my issue of compensation for 4 days without a service we pay for? This has been dealt with also, via twitter and not via the actual staff i spoke to who were unable to go off script and give me what i wanted……

Hail twitter…..and good for BT, embracing it and making it work!

BT & Christmas…..

bt_logo1From Friday morning until this morning (tuesday) we had no broadband/internet or Vision T.V.

25th, 26th, 27th and 28th of December!

I understand that this is a holiday period for virtually the whole earth. I also understand that fixing the problem over these few days would have been unlikely. I am not one of those guys who shouts unreasonably about this kind of thing, especially not to staff who are just reading the script to me!

Here’s the thing though……

After we got our service back this morning, I asked about whether BT will compensate for my “4 days without internet and BT Vision!

Like i say, i am not the loud complainer and its not about the money BUT i don’t care what BT class as holidays and i don’t care if you mistakenly believe you fixed my fault within 48 hours!

The only thing that matters is that i was without your service for 4 days! That you don’t recognise 3 of those days as actual days is just stupid!

Facebook thou art no more……

facebook-deathOk, i have not totally killed it & besides, we all know that you can never really delete Facebook, but for now i have de-activated the sucker!

I jokingly told some friends/associates on Facebook that it was because i was fed up with them. That is not too far from the truth though!

No one person should feel offended but as a collective it had become too noisy. Too many opinions and far too many comments & reactions were beginning to melt my brain. And yea, lets be honest some people should not be allowed to interact online, the ‘ass-hole’ in some of us tends to shine best when behind a computer screen & keyboard!

When you sign up & add lots of “friends” then you open yourself up to that kind of thing, so rather than complain about it, i felt it best to switch off for a time.

Whether i truly come back is still up for debate. If i come back, i may seriously limit my friends to a small number etc etc

I am still here and still on twitter for those who are avid fans, all 2 of you……

The Mars Hill iPhone app

iphone_feature_promoYou don’t have to be a Mars Hill or Mark Driscoll fan to appreciate the brilliance of this iPhone app. Not long ago i shared a conversation about what a Church app for the iPhone could possibly achieve, in truth we dismissed it as possible unnecessary , fools we are! Ok, these guys have a lot more content online & are really sailing the ship of innovation on this kind of thing but this is a pointer to other Churches. This is a benchmark even though many people will say ‘why do we need something like this?”
Some of you do not have websites at your Church, some of you are still recording onto cassette! So, what does this do?

Our prayer for the iPhone app is that on your daily commute, bike ride, walk, or break at work, you can have the chance to worship God through teaching or music.

Here is what you’ll be able to do with the iPhone app;

Listen to any Mars Hill sermon available on marshillchurch.org

Watch any Mars Hill sermon video

Stream any Mars Hill music

Email sermon links to your friends

Give to the mission of Mars Hill

Stay informed and up to date through the blog

Get campus locations and listings

And, as we’ve always done, all of the content will be given away at no charge to you. As a church we’re grateful that the app was built and developed by volunteers as a gift for all of us.

So, even if you DO NOT like Mark, his teaching, his ministry or Church, do download this, its FREE & just have a look, see what is possible with an iPhone app in your Church. Get the app on iTunes here
