Lose weight with me / walking

Well……….

Walking with a little bit of running thrown in.

This route you see on the left is 2.99 miles and I honestly couldn’t say how much of this I ran…..definitely less than half of it is running but, thats not really the point.

This is about a mile short of what I’ve been trying to do a few times a week….

When I tried my first little bit of running I was wrecked within 200 yards…….no joke……I thought I was going to die!

But, I had to start somewhere so I started running enough to be out of breath and, then I walked until I had cooled down a bit, then ran some more……..it’s amazing what you can achieve by paying attention to your own limits and pushing a bit harder each time.

I am not trying to break any records or run a marathon but as a part of my attempt to lose weight this has worked. I can now run for farther without feeling like the world is about to end and, I have begun to feel much healthier in general…..

Right now for me, it’s just about getting regular exercise to compliment healthy eating…..weight watchers is taking care of the food! More about that another time though.

So, what’s stopping you? How much exercise do you get in a week? In a day?

Some walking could be a great start for you?

Maybe you already walk or run?

Tell me about how you do that?

Lose weight with me……

When I joined Weight Watchers 12 weeks ago, I was 15st 3lbs…….

I am now 14st 2lbs……..which is good but, not quite good enough……….yet!

But, here’s the thing! This post is not about my achievement so far……..per se……I’d like this post to be the beginning of more than that…

If I blogged about Mark Driscoll’s latest smart-ass remark or Rob Bell’s big wipe-board of guff, you would all be commenting furiously like there was no tomorrow……

If I wrote a witty tirade about how we should do music in Church………….yawn………you get the picture……

Our bodies are important! Our health is important! And a lot of people are unhealthy! A lot of Christians are unhealthy………that is a fact!

Since I mentioned losing some weight I’ve had dozens of conversations with people about the issue. I know lots of folks who are in this process of shifting some pounds right now. Some of you are doing great and some of you are struggling…..some of you are also blogging about the process which is great accountability I reckon. Some of you have just begun the journey…..

Some of you need to lose weight and you just don’t know it yet……

Can we help each other?

If I blogged weekly would we share what our week has been like, what’s working for us, what’s not working?

Many of us are connected via facebook, twitter and blogs and we share links, comments and ideas all week…..

Can we do this?

Who’s in?

Erasing Hell….

On Sunday afternoon I read Erasing Hell by Francis Chan and Preston Sprinkle…

The book is a direct response to Love Wins by Rob Bell…… ah, google it! I can’t be bothered going into all that again….

Really though. The topic of hell and what the Bible actually says has become the discussion topic of 2011 amongst a LOT of Christians…..

“How could a loving God send people to hell? Will people have a chance after they die to believe in Jesus and go to heaven?”

These are two of the questions that Chan & Sprinkle seek to answer.

Let’s skip the pleasantries though, I don’t do book reviews as many of you know……..

The lasting thought for me has been that God is God……many others have said the same since reading the book….

“……whether or not you end up agreeing with everything I say about hell, you must agree with Psalm 115:3. Because at the end of the day, our feelings and wants and heartaches and desires are not ultimate—only God is ultimate. . . . Expect then, that Scripture will say things that don’t agree with your natural way of thinking” (p17)

Think about this for a few minutes….

“Only God is ultimate………”

Some of us want to challenge and question this but what we want is not important….

“Our God is in the heavens; he does all that he pleases.” Psalm 115 v 3

Things I learned on Sunday….

Ruth said “Why have I found favor in your eyes, that you should take notice of me, since I am a foreigner?”

Boaz replied “All that you have done for your mother-in-law since the death of your husband has been fully told to me, and how you left your father and mother and your native land and came to a people that you did not know before.”

Ruth worked for Boaz and, she didn’t expect him to know much about her, let alone treat her as he did….

Are you an employer? A manager? A supervisor? Even if you are not these things, do you work with other people? Day after day?

Most of us do….

But, how much do you know about those people? How much do you care?

Boaz looked past the employee status and saw a real person with real experiences and struggles.

Do we do this with our staff, colleagues or customers?

I wonder can we learn from how Boaz treated Ruth and take that into our workplace?

I wonder do we care enough about other people to consider this?

but only God who gives the growth…..

What then is Apollos? What is Paul? Servants through whom you believed, as the Lord assigned to each. I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth.” 1 Corinthians 3 v 5-7

And here are the few words that have been floating around my head….

“but only God who gives the growth.”

We can’t force people to be interested in God. We can’t bribe people to love God. We can’t persuade them to grow……..

We can plant, We can water…..

And, here is a small confession. Sometimes this really gets me down……..

Sometimes I want people to be more interested, to show signs of growth. Not because I am super and they need to reach my standard!

but, because the growth that God gives is the only growth that matters…..

“but only God who gives the growth.”
