Quotes on Bible reading……

These are leftover quotes that did not get mentioned at small group this week………

“Tell me what the Bible is to a person and I will generally tell you what they are. This is the pulse to try—this is the barometer to look at—if we would know the state of the heart. I have no notion of the Spirit dwelling in a person and not giving clear evidence of His presence. And I believe it to be clear evidence of the Spirit’s presence when the Word is really precious to a person’s soul.” JC Ryle

“You know more about your ledgers than your Bible; You know more about your magazines and novels than what God has written; many of you will read a novel from the beginning to the end, and what have you got? A mouthful of foam when you are done.” C.H. Spurgeon

About 8 years ago…..

I started studying with the Open University……….the aim was to ‘get‘ a degree…………

“A degree in the arts and humanities enables you demonstrate broad-based cultural knowledge alongside high-level analytical skills. This qualification allows you to study in depth over a wide range of specialisms; study options include art history, classical studies, creative writing, English language, French, German, history, literature, music, philosophy, religious studies, and Spanish.

Studying the arts and humanities provides you with broad perspectives about human culture. You’ll study a range of issues, which encompass understanding of the past, reading and studying the arts, and the analysis of differential points of view. Whatever study pathway you choose, you will encounter a diverse range of topics from across different periods and civilisations.”

So, now I’m done with the studies……and, whether its a first, second or third degree is not too big of an issue………..and, whether I can demonstrate a “broad-based cultural knowledge” or whether I have “broad perspectives about human culture” is………..well, its neither here nor there I guess……..

But, hooray nonetheless……

Lose weight with me / catch-up

The truth is, I’ve been stuck at the same weight for a few weeks now and, have found myself bumping the points tallying and “dedicated weight loss program” down the list of priorities……

Thats ‘posh speak’ for “Iv been a lazy git.”

I could say I am too busy………..I am busy to be sure…………but thats a bit of a cop out!

There isn’t too much else to say….but, we are about to enter the food festival also known as Christmas………

I started at 15st 4lbs in May………I am now 13st 6.9lbs……..(ish) and I’ve went down a waist size and two belt notches………

Can I maintain that and not wreck it in the run-up to and during Christmas?

We shall see…..

What about you? Do you pig out at Christmas and pay for it in January?

Facebook detox….

So, I said I was going to take a ‘break from this’………

On 1st December I will de-activate my Facebook account until sometime in 2012…….I have already removed the app from my phone!

I have been wrestling a little bit with this stuff……………..and will use this time away to think more about what it means to be a Christian in the ‘world’ of Facebook……………

Wonderful comments, links and ‘conversations’ have been and can be had via Facebook so, its not a bad thing…..per se…..it really isn’t. And, I will be back for sure……………{I think}

However, the way some of us use it is often pathetic……its part of the reason why I am bowing out for a wee while!

But, let’s be clear……….I have often been just as guilty as the next person…….. showing a lack of wisdom in how I ‘speak’ on Facebook and Twitter…..It’s a constant learning curve – if you want to grow up and not be a bozo that is – and, it’s real easy to ‘type and send’ without a thought for how your words will be perceived………it’s just as easy to intentionally insult someone………………when they are not right in front of you to punch you in your face or question your ignorance you behave differently don’t you?

I don’t want to be a hypocrite in such a public way…….a lot of us are doing this though………with the groups we join, the jokes we enter into, the ‘banter’ we enjoy and the snooping on other people’s profiles…………coupled with the faith we profess……….what kind of example is this?

Does my online behaviour reflect my faith in Christ? Can I ‘follow Jesus’ effectively on Facebook and Twitter?

And, for many ‘Christians’ it’s consuming our lives……..It really is……………we can’t set our phones down for more than 30 seconds without checking Facebook/Emails/Twitter…………..we join in with ‘conversations’ on Facebook that have nothing to do with us and get all bent out of shape for silly reasons………we watch who our ‘friends’ interact with and create scenarios and drama’s that simply do not exist outside of our own stupid heads!

We can’t get through a Church service or even a conversation with another human being………….without a Facebook check, a text message or a tweet or 50……..and we now justify it……..we don’t even try to apologise for our ignorance any more!

If I know you and you do this…………I want to challenge you…………….I will challenge you…………get ready!

So, anyway I am {in danger of} ranting………but, I’m pretty sure a few of us need a Facebook detox!

{If you are really interested in me and not just snooping at what I am saying/doing on Facebook then you can read my blog…………I hope you will…………it will still exist on a daily {almost} basis………..}

These things are not ‘the point’

“The place I’m most fed up with and stumped is Church. I’m worn out with it. I’m worn out with the music for the most part. The pop-rock radio songs on sunday morning – I don’t want that to be my escape. [laughs] That’s a gaping hole I feel in my heart now…..in my life. I used to draw a lot of strength from church, and now I feel like I’m either too cool for it or I have some kind of justifiable frustration with it.” Darren King {MUTEMATH} in Relevant Magazine Nov/Dec 2011

I want to say “what a bozo.” I also want to say that I feel sorry for this guy……..but, I also want to say “I understand.”

Because, I could be this guy! The guy who gets consumed by what the music is like. The guy who thinks Church is just about what I ‘get.’ The guy who thinks he is ‘too cool.’ The guy who always has some kind of ‘justifiable frustration’ with Church!

Yep, some of Church is about music. Some of Church is about what I ‘get.’ Some of Church is way less ‘cooler’ than I am. Some of Church frustrates me, justifiably!

But these things are not ‘the point’…….

We are surrounded by people who are making these things ‘the point’ or who have already made them ‘the point’ and, have left!
