I have been raving about the Cee Lo Green album all week ……..this is one of the many ‘big’ tracks on the record!
Mark Driscoll & Santa Claus….

Driscoll’s opinion on what we should tell our Children about Santa Claus is pretty well summarised in the above graphic….
You can read his full article in The Washington Post here
After sharing the link on Facebook yesterday, a friend commented/pondered about whether Santa “ever needs reconciled with religion?”
The question on my mind is; does absolutely everything we say and do need to be reconciled with what we believe about God?
I believe it does…. its easy to say this but I can’t claim to practice it and neither can you.
Being hoodwinked into believing in a fantasy character who left presents at Christmas, did not cause me to think that Jesus was a fantasy fictional character but, I can see how it might have……
The actual story of Saint Nick? What would be wrong with telling that?
As Driscoll points out in the article, he fell out of favour with the Protestants during the reformation so……fast forward to my childhood and all the ‘Christian’ families I know including my own, are telling their children the lie about Santa!
Its only a little lie though? And a bit of fun?
Of course, I do not have children so debating this is kind of pointless but….
I am genuinely curious about what others think!

Today in a Manger Pt 3

In the last week my thoughts have been drawn to a question…
“How and why have we created this religious monster that we call christianity?”
You know the one I mean?
The one where its essentially just a club for well-dressed people who drive nice cars and have a good education!
I’ve thought this because, in his book Ian has done a great job of explaining the people and places in the story.
I can’t help but think we have forgotten some of these facts. They are lost in a hazy media filled fantasy called ‘Christmas.’
Mary and Joseph, not wealthy or influential becoming parents to the son of God in a crummy hole in the wall location?
Shepherds, hardly at the peak of society guided to be the ‘first evangelists’ of this good news about Jesus?
Somehow – despite the glaringly obvious poverty within the story – we have created a ‘brand’ that casts aside the origin of our Lord and Saviour. He came into the world on the lowest rung of the ladder…….and often because of the half-baked ‘fairy-tale’ re-telling of His story, we forget that.
Before I read this book I had said that I do not read advent books…..and it’s usually because they seem a bit cheesy. They always promise to shed new light on the Christmas story and rarely do.
At 14 days in, I am really glad to be reading this book.
Not because Ian is a local author and I know him, not because I got a free copy to read and review….
Because it really has caused me to consider some of the things about the birth of Jesus that had previously washed over me in a glaze of Christmassy festive dirge…..
