Rob’s Hell, our toxicity and a shoe….

Rob has said that he believes in Hell…..

It was recorded and the audio clip is evidence….and thats that!

I’m glad he cleared that up for the “traditional Christians” who thought he might be a heretic…

The problem with his affirmation of Hell is that he has already redefined what it actually is/means.

I think the following clip illustrates the absurdity of what Rob has done by redefining Hell and then affirming it…

Unofficially Rob appears to believe……..well, you can finish that sentence however you wish!

Kevin DeYoung said the following in his review of Love Wins

“This is a book for people like Bell, people who grew up in an evangelical environment and don’t want to leave it completely, but want to change it, grow up out of it, and transcend it.”

I grew up in the ‘evangelical environment……..

There is much about it that grates on my hairy face and makes me wince!

But is ‘traditional Christianity’ as we know it “mis-guided & toxic?”

Rob says it is…… (preface : viii)

That’s why you and I need to change it and redefine all the things that our forefathers got wrong?

We need to “Grow up and transcend it”

We have the internet, wikipedia, iPads and cappuccino….we are well equipped for transcending!

Or perhaps not….

And I love the irony in the fact that I will no doubt be labelled ‘mean-spirited or judgemental’ for these comments…….

Remember that the ‘traditional Christianity’ which I affirm and believe is “misguided & toxic”

That’s 2000 years of Church history, scholars, theologians and how many million people?

What they believed and understood and in some cases died for………..

“misguided”

“toxic”

Now that is arrogance! And perhaps a little judgemental….

But, Iv now finished reading the book and……I am sure there will be more discussion but for now all I can say is…

I wholeheartedly disagree with almost everything in the book!

It could change your world…

“Sadly, somehow our generation has failed to inspire younger Christians to love God’s Word. In many a sermon the Bible only gets a passing nod. In many a youth group, young adult leaders do not know the Bible themselves – and are not reading it regularly. Many parents do not read the Bible with their children or model its practice. Church leaders and parents are not encouraging daily Bible reading as givens for Christian nurture and discipleship.”

This is an extract from the ‘Scripture Union Bible Supplement’ in this months Christian Marketplace Magazine...

Our small group has parked the study on the Sermon on the Mount for the time being, in favour of a real look at the Bible…..because we all admit to struggling with what we know and understand about it.

We aren’t using the Scripture Union material, perhaps we will take a look though….

What they are doing with the E100 Challenge is great, as is the Biblefresh campaign by the Evangelical Alliance….

Driscoll, Hell and Bell…

The truth is that I was going to blog about this stuff today….and I changed my mind! And then I changed it back…

Yesterday I watched/listened to Mark Driscoll’s sermon on Heaven and Hell – you can see his notes here

I was challenged by the sermon. I believed Mark’s genuine concern for his congregation. He is a Pastor and I thought that was obvious by his demeanour…..

But opinions differ…. and ultimately what he was saying was of the utmost importance…..with less emphasis on how he was saying it! So sometimes you need to get past the shouting….

I need to apply the same logic to Bell though.

When I have seen him respond to criticisms about his book, he has appeared aloof and arrogant with a twist of immaturity………..and not at all Pastoral! But opinions differ….and like I said, what he has been saying is of more importance than how he says it…

It is important how we say things but, thats not the most important thing!

Appearances can be deceptive and fuelled by our pre-conceived notions and ideas of people…

I just heard Martin Sheen talk about God on Irish TV and I have only characters he has played to go on…..so, I believe what he said and he seemed genuine….I wish I’d taken notes, it was fascinating!

As for the Rob Bell Book? Discussion and debate and perhaps opinions will occur in April….

You might get to hear about that….

Lennon, TV and Jesus

“If I had said television is more popular than Jesus, I might have got away with it….” John Lennon

We can talk at length about TV shows?

We can quote dialogue from TV shows, films and songs?

More confidently and with more assurance than talking about Jesus?

John Lennon was onto something, he just couldn’t articulate it very well…

Rob Bell & the “fate of every person who ever lived”

And isn’t it fitting that just before I head into a month of image posts with no words……

A couple of people made me aware of the promo video (below) and the blog post at The Gospel Coalition (here)

A month ago, I said this re: Bell and the book….

LOVE WINS. from Rob Bell on Vimeo.

Gosh Golly darn……who knew?!!

Now, watch with me as a massive amount of “mainstream evangelical Christians” (whatever that even means) read, digest and see nothing too concerning or worrying about this book……..

Now, somebody pass the fruit-cake!
