“Only 10 per cent of the 200 most frequent retweeters of referendum content were human“
– The above quote is from: Beware the Brexit bots: The Twitter spam out to swing your vote – Read it here at New Scientist.
The vacuum of social media
I said this just the other day in a reflection about the EU referendum.
Social media continues to be a place where a sense of outrage is heightened and exaggerated at a frightening rate.
The frenzy of emotion has been fascinating and infuriating to watch over the past week. But, in the vacuum of social media – especially on Twitter – how much hysteria is being initiated, encouraged and spread by the rapid behaviour of bots?
And what about everything else on Twitter? All of the other content that influences us?
Football, fashion, fitness, food, music, religion… a world of bots, sharing, re-tweeting and trawling.
To have a healthy democracy a modern citizen should be aware that their feed is shaped by bots – Philip Howard
I might go a step further than Howard does with that quote and say that; to have a healthy mind a modern citizen should be aware that their feed is shaped by bots.
Ps: we bought a plant last week. I’ve decided to call it Brexit.
