…the rapid dissemination of digital media has shaped our generation. In fact, it happened so quickly that we’re struggling to adapt. For a generation labelled as ‘digital natives’, we still seem curiously at odds with this new reality. According to Rohan Gunatillake, we continue to compartmentalise our behaviour into the ‘real’ and the ‘virtual’ in the hope of finding a healthy balance between the two. It’s a phenomenon called ‘digital dualism’: as much as we believe that we are now always connected, in the minds of our generation the dichotomy of online versus offline still prevails.
