I would be true to say that I read a fair few magazines and blogs and each month there are themes which reoccur. Much like the latest trend, fitness fad or celebrity gossip – health fads are also making their way into my women’s magazine. The latest one – Sleep.

A good night’s sleep, it seems, is hard to find. People everywhere are apparently tossing and turning, unable to get a good night of rest. The magazines diagnose stress, a hectic lifestyle, and our fast pace lives as the reason why no one seems to be getting any sleep. Sleep is an important thing and, of course, that means that money can be made from our lack of it. Health professionals are touting all kinds of therapy, diets and even smart phone apps that will improve you sleep – but are we missing the root cause of our sleepless nights?

In the Bible King David writes about an incident when he fled from his palace to hide in the wilderness because an enemy was about to invade and tear the city apart. The enemy just happened to be his son – you can read about the entire grisly back story here. In the wilderness David writes a diary entry which we know as Psalm ch3. Verse 3 says,

“I lay down and slept,
     yet I woke up in safety,
        for the Lord was watching over me.”

Sleep isn’t something that comes easily when people are under stress or attack yet David declares that he lay down, fell asleep and woke in the morning. How could he sleep so soundly? He tells us in verses 3&4;

But you, Lord, are a shield around me,
    my glory, the One who lifts my head high.
I call out to the Lord,
    and he answers me from his holy mountain.”

David has confidence in God calling him “the One who lifts my head high”. His sleep is miraculous under the intense circumstances and David, true to form, gives the glory to God calling him his sustainer. We may have struggles, worries, bills, and stresses that keep us awake at night but if David was able to sleep in his situation then too can have confidence that God is in control too. David knew that God had helped him in the past, had promised to help him in the future and that faith brought him through the difficult times.

A verse from a book of the Bible called Joshua says this;

This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

The Lord is with me. That promise is better than any sleeping app, tablet or herbal remedy for me.
