Why I minimalised my blog design….

04/01/2013 — 8 Comments

In a nutshell……

I spend a large portion of my working week designing for other people and didn’t want the hassle of having to create something unique for my blog…

But, that’s not all…

I want my blogging in 2013 to be about the content……I want the content to be good and worthy of your attention! In 2012, I let the ball drop too often on that front!

I’m re-discovering and re-imagining the hows and whys of blogging….sort of….and, remembering why I began doing this in 2004…..and, plotting something ‘new’ that we can’t wait to kick-off!

So, a question for you………if you blog….why? And if you read blogs……why and what is it that keeps you going back to a blog?

  1. I usually Flipboard my blogs into some sort of Google Reader… I like reading a clatter of different blogs, people who are serious, people who are not so, but mainly people who blog as a real life person and not a robot.

I write little thoughts that come to me during my day, then blog about them later. I’m not the most regular blogger, which I lament. I don’t think I’d have the patience to write a book (although I’d love to!) so a blog is my next best thing.

(Not to blow your trumpet…) But yours is one of my top reads, ever since I probably ridiculed you for having a Blogger about 10 years ago! I appreciate your honesty!

    Oh, and the music/book recommendations!

  2. Content. Content. Content. You’re spot on in re-calibrating your attention to the content you create for this blog (which I’ve always been fond of and the reason this Yank keeps coming back). I follow a truckload of blogs, but I have a handful of favorites and that’s primarily because of the content they present whether written content or media. Keeping that in mind, I also think it’s important to have a design that is also appealing to readers. Part of the reason I don’t just stick to an RSS client to aggregate everything into a box for me, is because for me people’s blogs are a lot like album artwork; I want something I can see and also experience rather than just consume. Part of the downfall of digital music is the absence of the treasured artwork that accompanies record sleeves, cassette wrappers, and CD case inserts. If you’re thought that your content over the last year hasn’t been up to par… I’m really excited to see what you produce in 2013, bro!

  3. Content, community, creativity and provocation would be some of the reasons for blogging! Keep on with substance and style

  4. Came across your blog site through twitter which I’ve been using for a few years but only more regularly in the last few months. There have been a few sites that I’ve followed in the past but I also now have your’s at the top of the list
    a – because its local
b – because you have a number of the same interests as myself.

Love the minimalist design (which was there from I started reading your blog) as it focuses in more on what your saying rather than being a distraction. Would be great if you could recommend (at some stage) a few other blog sites (of a similar ilk.)

    Blessings bro.
