“Religion is man searching for God; Christianity is God seeking man, manifesting Himself to him, drawing Himself to man.” –Martin Lloyd Jones

Years ago, I had a frustrating discussion with a ‘non-Christian’ work colleague in which, I tried to point out that I was not “Religious.” He had been raised in one of the more ‘fundamentalist’ denominations here in Northern Ireland.

It wasn’t until long after this encounter that I started to better understand why ‘Religion’ is bad and why it is the enemy of the Gospel.

If you have been raised in ‘the Church’ then you have definitely been influenced by ‘religion.’ If you have left ‘the Church’ or been negatively affected by people within ‘the Church,’ it’s probably because of ‘religion’ and not the Gospel or Jesus!

And at 33 years old it continues to influence me even when I don’t think it is!

But what happens when we have questions? What happens if we suddenly find ourselves surrounded by ‘religion’ with questions and frustrations and a desire to smash it to one side and grasp faith more fully?

Or, what if you are still confused by the blurred lines between ‘faith + religion?’

Thats what these posts will be about…….I hope

More coming soon…..

Anger & Lust Pt 2

10/11/2010 — 1 Comment

Everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

In 2010 it seems that ‘looking’ with ‘lustful intent’ has become so ordinary and accepted that it really is no wonder we have such huge issues with pornography and every other kind of sexual sin imaginable within ‘the Church.’

Its hard to convince anyone that pornography is a dark destructive evil when God’s intention for men and women and for sex, has been trampled over and minimised.

Young Christians are sleeping around just as much as anyone else now because, they have listened to culture and followed their lustful desires instead of Jesus.

Married Christian men and women are addicted to pornography, visiting prostitutes, carrying on affairs and wrecking their marriages because they have listened to culture and followed their lustful desires instead of Jesus.

Not looking lustfully at a man or women is sadly not a priority issue for most Christians let alone “non-Christians.”

But, we all have lustful desires! Some more than others but, we all have them. I don’t say this to point a finger or judge anyone though. I do not know what temptations could arrive in front of me at any stage of life!

But, Jesus said “If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away.”

Would we get rid of the internet to avoid porn? Would we ditch the TV or at least keep it turned off late at night to avoid some of the stuff that tempts us? Would we even just stop buying those magazines that aren’t porn but they have “lads” articles and plenty of hot chick pictures? Would we?

Or do we not see this stuff as sin or as dangerous?

Is any of that worth losing your marriage over? Is it worth ruining relationships over? Is it worth losing your life over?

Culture tells us its ok to leer and perve at people! Culture tells us that porn is ok to look at. Culture tells us its ok to have sex outside of marriage and with loads of different people. Culture tells us its ok to leave your husband/wife and find a sexier version. It has always said this, its not a new thing for the 21st Century…….

Purity might get sneered at in 2010, it probably always did but, it is more important than culture.

It was Jesus who said it….

“Everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”

Just started to read this…..

We watched a documentary about Keith a couple of days ago – just before I started the book – and during it he described himself as ‘possibly the most famous drug-addict ever.’ He might be right but, even if you are appalled by that fact and amazed by how he has managed to stay alive against all the odds, we cannot escape the music.

The Rolling Stones impact on music often gets unfairly pushed behind that of The Beatles but a look at their origins and influence tells us that, few ‘white boys’ would have ever discovered the Blues without ‘The Stones’ and Keith. They led a charge with Keith’s guitar at the helm and to be blunt about it, they are just as important in the History of music as the “Fab Four.”

I may say more about this book!

If you are a music fan, you have to pick this one up…..

Crossroads…

One should never get tired of hearing this song……..

A couple of sweet solo’s from Eric, and some beautiful work on the keys by Jools Holland & Chris Stainton just make this sweeter still!

From ‘Later with Jools Holland,’ broadcast last week on the BBC.
